AlwaysOnTopNotes is a free, open-source app that gives you real always-on-top sticky notes — no install, no account, and nothing ever leaves your device.
Why it exists
Native sticky-notes apps — Windows Sticky Notes, macOS Stickies — have been around for two decades, but they share two frustrations: they disappear behind your other windows exactly when you need them, and they're locked to one operating system. Cloud notes apps solve the "always available" part, but only by uploading everything you write.
When browsers shipped the Document Picture-in-Picture API, a third option became possible for the first time: a sticky note that floats above every app like a native one, works on any desktop OS like a website, and keeps your data entirely on your device. As far as we can tell, AlwaysOnTopNotes is the only app that does all three. So we built it.
What we believe
Your data never leaves your device
Not a marketing line — an architecture. There is no server to send notes to. Everything lives in your browser's local storage, and the source is open so you can prove it.
Free, forever, no account
No signup, no email, no trial that expires. The whole point is to be faster than reaching for a native sticky-notes app — friction would defeat that.
Open source, auditable
MIT-licensed and public on GitHub. If you don't trust a privacy claim, you shouldn't have to — you should be able to read the code. So you can.
Built for keyboard-first speed
Press N for a new note, / to search, ? for every shortcut. The fastest way to jot a thought should be a keystroke, not a mouse hunt.
Who builds it
AlwaysOnTopNotes is built and maintained by Shrestha Tripathi, an independent software developer, as part of a small family of browser-native, privacy-first tools that run entirely on your device. It's funded by being cheap to run (it's just static files) and, eventually, unobtrusive ads — never by selling data we don't even collect.
